Common editor issues

What to check if your content isn't saving, a character's name links wrongly or not at all, or formatting looks different after export than it did in the editor.

My content doesn’t seem to be saving

The editor saves automatically as you write. A moment after you stop typing, your changes sync in the background; a small Saving indicator appears in the toolbar while a save is in flight.

If your connection has dropped, an Offline indicator appears in the top bar. Your changes are still being saved on your device, and they sync automatically once you’re back online. The indicator switches to Syncing, then Synced, as that happens.

If content still looks wrong, check version history for the document; Endra Studio saves a version at the start of each writing session.

A chapter is blank while I’m offline

This happens on a device that hasn’t finished stocking its offline copy: usually one you’ve just signed in on, or a project you haven’t opened on it before. Only what you’ve never opened on that device is affected, notes and boards included, and nothing has been lost from any of it.

Reconnect and open the chapter once. It stays available offline after that. See working offline for what’s kept on your device.

The grammar checker isn’t flagging a missing period or comma

It isn’t meant to. Grammar checking works on words and short phrases: agreement, doubled words, confused wording like could of, and a handful of specific comma rules such as the one after an opening However. It does not judge sentences as a whole, so a missing final period, a missing serial comma, and two sentences run together with no punctuation between them all pass without comment.

Spelling is the more thorough half of the checker. If a word is genuinely misspelled and not being flagged, check that it isn’t in your project’s custom dictionary, and that the spelling dialect you’re checking against is the one you meant. Both live under your project’s settings. See spelling and grammar checking.

If a grammar flag you were getting has stopped, check Rules you’ve turned off under your project’s settings — someone on the project may have switched that rule off with Never flag this. Swearing is never flagged, deliberately.

Spell check looks different on my phone, and grammar isn’t checked

On some devices, iPhone and iPad in particular, the Studio’s checker can take minutes to start, or can’t start at all. When it isn’t ready after about 15 seconds, the editor uses your device’s own spell check instead. That one underlines misspellings in its own style, doesn’t check grammar, and doesn’t know your project’s dictionary. If the Studio’s checker finishes starting later, it takes over again on its own. A character’s name isn’t linking

Character names link on their own as you type. If one doesn’t, check:

• Capitals: names are matched as they’re written on the profile, so “daisy” doesn’t link to Daisy.
• Aliases: a nickname links only if it’s listed as one of the character’s aliases and contains a capital letter.
• Shared names: a name or alias two characters share links to neither. Link it with @ instead.
• Muted names: if someone chose Stop linking for that wording, it’s listed under Not linked in your project’s settings, under Characters.
• The switch: Link character names automatically, in the same place, may be turned off for the project.

A word links to a character when it shouldn’t

A character whose name is also an ordinary word, like Will or Rose, links wherever that word is capitalized, including at the start of a sentence. Click the word and choose Stop linking. That wording stops linking anywhere in the project, and a longer name such as “Will Turner” keeps linking.

My export doesn’t look like it did in the editor

Some difference between the editor and an exported file is expected: the .docx export uses Standard Manuscript Format (double-spaced, indented paragraphs, running header), not your on-screen editor preferences. If something looks substantially wrong (missing text, broken formatting, images not appearing), check that:

• Include images was toggled on when you exported (it’s off by default)
• Any images in the affected section are still present in your asset library rather than archived

If it still looks wrong after checking both, open a ticket rather than working around it.
