Two people can write in the same document at the same time, and their edits merge live.

Once a collaborator joins your project, you don’t have to take turns. Two people can write in the same document at the same time.

A project can have any number of collaborators, and they can all work across the project at once. Only two can be inside the same document simultaneously.

Seeing who’s there

When someone else opens the document you’re in, their avatar appears above the editor. Select it to see who it is: their name, email, and role in the project. The bar only appears when someone else is in the document.

How simultaneous edits work

Both people’s changes merge live as they type. There’s no locking and no picking whose version wins. Two people can work in different paragraphs of the same scene, and each sees the other’s words appear as they’re written.

The rest of the project behaves the same way: anything a collaborator creates or changes shows up for everyone without a refresh.

If someone loses their connection

A collaborator who drops offline can keep writing. Their edits save on their own device and merge back in when they reconnect, exactly as described in Working offline.

Editors, beta readers, and real time

Editors and beta readers never see the live document. They read a frozen copy of what you sent them in a review round, so nothing you write after sending reaches them, and they don’t count toward the two-person limit. Only collaborators share the live view.
